Flossing your teeth is the most important part of your daily program of personal oral hygiene. With daily care, your teeth should last a lifetime. Proper instruction by a dental health professional is recommended. Cut off a piece of dental floss two or three feet long. Wrap one end around your index finger for the purpose of anchoring or holding the floss. Use your thumb to hold the floss against your index finger. Grasp the floss with your opposite hand so that approximately one inch or less of floss is between your fingers. Guide the floss with your fingertips gently between two teeth. Carry the floss under the gum until you feel definite resistance without discomfort. With the floss hugging your tooth's surface, clean the plaque out and away from your gumline and off your tooth's surface. This action disorganizes and removes the bacteria from your tooth's surface that is not reached by your toothbrush. Repeat this procedure for all your teeth using a clean section of floss as needed.
